Things to see in Little Havana

Little Havana, which is a renown area of Miami, Florida, is named after Havana, Cuba, which is its capital and largest city. This region has become home to many Cuban refugees, as well as many groups from South and Central America. In fact, this vicinity had the highest concentration of Hispanics (98 percent) in Miami, as of 2011.

Within the Hispanic population, the Cuban population has declined, but Hispanics from other countries, including Honduras, Nicaragua, and other Central American countries, has significantly increased since the 1990s. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 76,163. This section of Miami was included in the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s annual list of 11 Most Endangered Places in 2015. In 2017, it was declared a national treasure by the Trust.

This hub of Miami-Dade County is well-known as a center of cultural, political, and social activity in Florida. Its storied festivals, such as the Calle Ocho Festival, has attracted TV viewers and sightseers every year on different continents. This area is also known for its landmarks, including its Walk of Fame, which honors famous Latin artists and personalities (e.g. Gloria Estefan), the Cuban Memorial Boulevard, the Tower Theater, St. John Bosco Catholic Church, Municipio de Santiago de Cuba, and many others.

This vicinity serves as the best-known area for Cuban immigrants in the world. The area relies on its cultural and ethnic ties. As such, an active social vibe, nightlife, musical, and other cultural activities permeate the atmosphere. This area is also heavily populated with eateries, mom and pop shops, and political organizations. There is also a real familial vibe to its residents.

During the '30s, this area was populated by Jewish and lower-middle-class Southern ethnicities. This section of Miami emerged as "Little Havana" during the 1960s as the concentration of Cubans in the area grew exponentially. As such, it has transformed into the cultural and political capital of Cuban-Americans, and needless to say, this region has become the center of the Cuban exile community in the U.S.
